`sat vs psat` is usually a naming panic: two similar College Board tests, two score scales, and a parent forwarding a screenshot. Prepful will not pretend a PSAT total is a 400–1600 SAT, and we will not ship a homemade PSAT converter. This page is the job split. Two tests, two jobs
The SAT is the admission test. Students send it to colleges. The sitting and official full-length practice live in Bluebook. The PSAT/NMSQT is the practice SAT most students meet in school. It is also the screen for National Merit. It is not a spare SAT you can mail instead.
What the names mix up
People say "PSAT SAT" when they mean one of three things: a practice run, a National Merit path, or an admission score. Only the last one is the SAT. Calling a PSAT total "my SAT" in a family group chat is how a 1400 conversation starts from the wrong instrument.

Score scales differ. Do not add 80 points in your head and call it science. We will not publish a table that pretends otherwise. Ask College Board if you need their published comparison, not a prep blog.
What to do with a PSAT score
Use it as a signal, not as an application number. If Math leaked on the PSAT, Digital SAT Math still weights algebra heavily — start with SAT algebra practice after you have a SAT-shaped baseline. If you have no SAT sections yet, take the 16-question diagnostic rather than inventing a 400–1600 from the PSAT.
A PSAT miss list is still useful. Tag why the item failed, redo a short set, and keep official SAT full-lengths scarce. Do not treat the PSAT as a weekly mock you can burn four of. National Merit cutoffs change and are not a Prepful table. If that program is the actual goal, College Board and the student's school own the rules.
Do not feed a PSAT into the SAT calculator
The SAT score calculator adds Reading and Writing and Math on the 200–800 SAT section scale. A PSAT section is not that input. The SAT score predictor wants four SAT module right/wrong counts from a sitting you just left. Neither tool is a PSAT decoder.
If the student is still choosing SAT versus ACT, convert ACT once with the ACT to SAT converter — official concordance, not a PSAT hack — then commit to one exam. Spreading both plus a PSAT story usually means no peak.
Timing without our dates table
Schools often put the PSAT on the calendar for you. The SAT window is a separate registration on College Board. When should I take the SAT is how to pick that window from a current SAT-shaped score. We will not copy either calendar here. A school-day SAT is still the SAT, not a second PSAT, even if it happens in the same building.
A PSAT does not replace a Bluebook SAT checkpoint. After the PSAT, keep official SAT full-lengths scarce and still in Bluebook. Weekday work can live in Digital SAT prep. Format — two SAT sections, modules, calculator on Math — is Digital SAT format. The PSAT is in the same digital family; it is still not the SAT you send.
If a counselor packet shows both scores on one line, ask which instrument produced which number before you set a target. A PSAT that "looks like 1400" is still not a SAT 1400 on what is a good SAT score. Good-score bands on this site are SAT totals from Prepful's table, not National Merit cutoffs we do not publish.
