HomeWhat is a good SAT score

What is a good SAT score? It depends on the target.

There is no single good Digital SAT score. A 1300 is strong for many lists and light for the most selective ones. Read the percentile, name a target, then measure the gap.

Percentile bands

1200, 1300, 1400, and 1500 on the same table.

These rows come from Prepful's percentile table — the same source as the calculator and the chart. They are not official College Board percentiles and not a university cutoff.

TotalPercentileTable tierHow to read it
120067thAverageNationally around average. Fine for many lists; not a verdict.
130082ndAbove AverageOften called "good." Still depends on the campuses on your list.
140092ndCompetitiveNationally competitive. Not a published campus middle 50%.
150098thEliteRare. Still not a guarantee at any named university.

Totals between these rows snap to the nearest chart line. If you have two section scores, add them on the SAT score calculator. If you only have a total, look it up on the SAT percentile chart.

What is the average SAT score?

There is no single official average on this page. On Prepful's percentile table — the same rows as the calculator and the chart — 1100 is about the 48th percentile (labeled below average) and 1150 is about the 58th (average−). 1200 is already the 67th percentile. Those are national bands, not a campus cutoff and not a state average table.

If you only wanted the shape of 1200–1500 in words, read SAT score ranges explained. If you have two section scores, add them first.

What is a good SAT score?

It depends on the campuses on your list. Nationally, 1300 is above average on Prepful's table. At a more selective list, 1300 can still be low. Use the gap to your target, not a generic label.

Is 1400 a good SAT score?

On Prepful's table, 1400 is about the 92nd percentile. That is nationally strong. It is still not a published middle 50% for any university. Check the school's own range.

What is the average SAT score?

On this table the national midpoint sits near 1100–1150: 1100 is about the 48th percentile and 1150 is about the 58th. Prepful will not publish a single official College Board mean or a state-by-state average.

Where do these percentiles come from?

The same approximate national table as Prepful's SAT score calculator and DSAT score chart. They are not an official College Board report.

Does Prepful promise I will reach a band?

No. Tools show a gap. A diagnostic and a plan decide what to practice. There is no guaranteed point gain.
