Most U.S. testers now sit the Digital SAT. If you last saw a paper SAT, do not assume the same section names, breaks, or calculator rules. This page is the format in plain language, then the Prepful pages that help you act on it. Format first. Practice second. Mixing those two is how sites accidentally promise an official test they do not own.
The score report in one picture
You get Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section score is 200–800 in 10-point increments. Add them for a 400–1600 total. There is no standalone essay on the current Digital SAT, and there is no separate Science section. That is the whole score report shape.

Exact minute counts are owned by College Board and can shift. Treat commercial blogs that publish a "secret" minute table as marketing.
Where percentiles and "is this good" belong
Percentiles and "is this good" questions belong on what is a good SAT score and the SAT score calculator, not here. If you only have a total and want the band in words, use SAT score ranges explained. This article stays on what the sitting looks like.
Prepful is not College Board. Any percentile table on this site is approximate. Do not paste it onto an application.
Timing, modules, and adaptive delivery
Each section is split into two modules. The test is adaptive: how you do on the first module affects the difficulty mix of the second. A sloppy first module is expensive. You cannot "make it up" with a heroic second module the way some students remember from paper.
Why module one is expensive
Untimed homework that always feels easy may not prepare you for module one. You still need content — adaptive delivery is not a new math.
What the adaptive design means for prep:
- Start the section the way you will start it on test day: focused, not warming up on the scored module.
- Short mixed sets with a clock beat another untimed perfect worksheet.
- A miss on module one is not "just one item." It can change what you see next.
What is on Reading and Writing
One combined section, not a separate Reading test and Writing test. Items are short. You will see vocabulary in context, transitions, student notes, and grammar that actually changes meaning. Long historical passages from the old paper SAT are not the default shape.
Prep implication: drilling 2,000 obscure SAT words is the wrong default. Words in context and passage logic matter more. If RW is your gap, a vocabulary sprint can still help, but only after you miss real items for meaning, not because a list existed. If the gap is the whole score, not the format, switch to how to improve your SAT score and pick one domain for four weeks.
What is on Math
Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry / trig. Algebra is the largest official domain by weight — about 35% of Math. That is why Prepful's first public skill page is SAT algebra, not a random geometry dump.
Calculator on every Math item
Calculator is allowed for the entire Math section. Students still lose points on linear setup, not on arithmetic. If your misses are "I knew the algebra but mistyped the expression," practice the setup on paper even though the device has a calculator.
What the Digital SAT is not
- It is not a paper SAT with a laptop skin. Section mix and pacing differ.
- It is not the ACT. If you are choosing, use SAT vs ACT and the ACT to SAT converter. Do not prepare both "just in case" unless you have time to waste.
- It is not scored by Prepful. We are not College Board.
- A 16-question Prepful diagnostic is not a Digital SAT. Do not send that number to a college.
How to practice the format without a full exam every day
Full-length Bluebook tests are scarce attention. Use them as checkpoints, not as daily homework. Between checkpoints:
- Skill work in the domain that is actually weak.
- Short mixed sets that respect module pressure — start focused, then add a clock.
- A weekly look at whether the same miss type repeats.

If you have no score yet, take the free diagnostic and treat the output as a range. If you already have section scores, add them in the calculator and read the percentile on the DSAT score chart. Then put the gap on a calendar.
Official rules vs Tuesday-night practice
Testing is on College Board's testing app — see Bluebook SAT app. Prepful does not administer the exam, lock a device, or decide accommodations. For those rules, use College Board. For what to study on a Tuesday night, use a plan that names a skill.
That split keeps this article honest. Format questions have official answers. Practice questions have product answers. College Board still sets the sitting: device rules, breaks, and what is allowed in the room. If a coach tells you a different minute count than your admission ticket, trust the ticket. Prepful will not invent a shadow schedule.
